What is at Stake? Why Should I Care?

The Redding-Georgetown Democratic Town Committee developed a vetted, experienced and accomplished slate of nominees that included a variety of new members for 2022. That slate was adopted without opposition by the members of the Democratic Town Committee and presented at the January 10th Democratic Caucus.

A group of unvetted, opposition candidates were nominated from the floor at the caucus on January 10, including candidates who only recently registered as Democrats, in order to support a narrow agenda.

As a result, the opposition succeeded with elected members who pledged to change the role of the DTC from its legitimate focus on identifying and supporting candidates for public office to one that ignores the interests of the larger community.  At this caucus, these narrow-focused candidates unseated many of the initial DTC-nominated slate.

In response, Real Redding Democrats came together to uphold the integrity of the Democratic Party in Redding. The March 1st Primary will make it possible for the electorate to restore the Democratic Town Committee to its legitimate purpose.

The approach the new opposition group would adopt, if they are seated, would be an unprecedented and radical departure from the well-established mission of the DTC, namely, to promote and support democratic values in all its forms and to serve all Democrats in the community. Your vote for the original slate will ensure Redding will continue to adhere to its legitimate and effective strategies.

Active, experienced members of the DTC were removed from the committee by the opposition after five rounds of voting. Those excluded include members of the following boards, commissions and other public servants:

  • Chair and Members of the Region 9 Board of Education
  • Chair and Member of the Board of Finance
  • Members of the Park and Recreation Commission
  • Member of the Board of Assessment Appeals
  • Chair of the Commission on Aging
  • Member of the Board of Ethics
  • A Town Constable
  • A volunteer Firefighter and EMT
  • The Democratic Registrar of Voters
